Samuel “Sam” William Oliver, Jr. died on Monday, February 9, 2015. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, he grew up in Dadeville, Alabama. He attended high school at the Baylor School in Chattanooga, TN and graduated from the University of Alabama (BS ’59, Accounting) where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He served two years in the United States Army (1956-1957). He returned to the University of Alabama for law school where he was a member of Phi Alpha Delta law fraternity. After graduating from law school in 1962 (LL.B.), he clerked for Alabama Supreme Court Justice Thomas S. Lawson, Sr. in Montgomery, Alabama. He returned to Birmingham in 1964 and clerked for United States Federal Judge Clarence W. Allgood. He was a partner in the law firm of Burr & Forman, formerly Thomas, Taliaferro, Forman, Burr and Murray, where he practiced corporate law for 43 years. He was listed in Best Lawyers in America from 1995-2001 and served on the planning committee for the Southeastern Corporate Law Institute. He was a member of the Monday Morning Quarterback Club, the Rotary Club of Birmingham, Beaux Arts Krewe, the Newcomen Society, and the Birmingham and Alabama Bar Associations. He was a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, serving on the vestry, as Jr. and Sr. Warden, and on the Diocesan Council of Alabama. An enthusiastic and, at times, irascible golfer, he was a member of the Country Club of Birmingham and the Killer Bees dog fight. He enjoyed trips with his family to the lake and to the beach. He was a lifelong learner and an avid reader, sports fan, wine enthusiast, fisherman, and photographer.
