Tonight kicks off the 29th annual Alexander City Jazz Fest at 6 p.m. in Strand Park. The Bank Walkers will start out the night followed by Sam Burchfield & The Scoundrels at 7:30 and finally Willie Sugarcapps at 9.

Grab your chairs, blankets, coolers and friends and head out tonight and Saturday night, too. This kind of event comes only once a year and it’s something Alexander City residents and even out-of-towners shouldn’t miss.

Area residents have been awaiting Jazz Fest all week — some all year — as it kicks off just at the tail end of the annual Alexander City Chamber of Commerce Sun Festival that has been going on this week. The excitement has been building since the lineup was released earlier this year and it’s an event that draws a huge crowd.

“I have stood at the bottom of the hill and the stage and watched that hill at Strand Park just be covered from top to bottom with people,” chamber director of marketing and special events Kim Dunn said in April.

Jazz Fest draws in a multitude of people, including those who love attending local events, those who love live music, those from out of town who want to have a good time and even the homebodies of the area. It’s something everybody can enjoy from the fun atmosphere to the good music to the camaraderie that comes with being around community members and friends.

The fun continues Saturday at The AMP on Lake Martin with Nikki & the Phantom Callers at 6 p.m., Empire Strikes Brass at 7:30 and Honey Island Swamp Band at 9.

We’re fortunate because Alex City is fun year-round but Jazz Fest is one of the biggest, best events of the year. Get out and enjoy the music and have some fun in our community.
