After sweeping its pool play games, Alexander City’s 6U all-star softball team entered its area tournament play as the No. 1 seed. The all-stars lived up to their expectations, making it all the way to the championship game.
Alex City defeated East Tuscaloosa, 17-11, in the semifinals but eventually fell in the final showdown to Millbrook. The second-place finish still guaranteed AC a spot in the state tournament, which is this weekend in Millbrook.
“The girls came ready to play on Saturday and simply outhit the other teams and followed it up with solid defense all day,” Alex City 6U coach Mike Nolen said. “All of us coaches and parents were extremely proud of the way they played this weekend.”
Rhylee Whetstone, Trinity Russell, Akiyah Simmons, Cienna Banks and Haley Edwards all hit home runs during Saturday’s tournament run.
Whetstone and Lee Ellen Shores were the top hitters of the day, going 11-for-12 and each scoring 10 runs. Lillian Smith was a perfect 6-for-6 with five runs scored.
Every single girl for Alex City hit extremely well with Emma Nolen and Pasliey Burch each smacking eight hits, and Jae Webb, Banks and Edwards following closely behind with seven hits apiece. Simmons and Rae Webb each had six hits, and Sophia Barrett contributed four hits and three runs scored.
“Every kid on the team is getting better each week and we are looking forward to the state tournament this weekend in Millbrook,” coach Nolen said. “From the looks of things, our softball program in Alex City — 6U through 12U — is heading in the right direction.”
