Our View

The first farmers market of the season kicked off at 7 a.m. this morning in Alexander City and is going through 11 a.m. today at Broad Street Plaza downtown.

If you miss it today, no worries. The market will continue every Saturday through Sept. 28.

The event features local farmers in addition to tents with baked goods, jams and arts and crafts vendors, according to Main Street Alexander City executive director Stacey Jeffcoat. Live music and bounce houses will be available for families throughout the summer, she said.

This is a great event for downtown Alexander City and it’s something everyone can enjoy. It’s a chance to get out of the house, enjoy the nice weather and mingle among community members.

“I love the camaraderie and atmosphere that goes on when we’re out there,” farmers market manager Carly Herrmann said. “We all help each other and it’s very nice.”

Plus the vendors have something for everyone to enjoy. Last year’s markets featured homemade honey, tons of homegrown fruits and vegetables and more.

Those of us who have eaten freshly grown local produce understand the difference between it and non-local produce. It just tastes better plus you’re supporting local farmers who live off our support.

There’s no reason to leave empty-handed, as everyone can find something they wanna take home between all that is offered at the market.

Be sure to head out this morning or on an upcoming Saturday to support our local farmers and other vendors.
