Alexander City police are investigating the death of a man who caught fire at a residence late Thursday afternoon.

A 2-year-old girl died Friday after being discovered in a pool at a residence on Pearson Chapel Road, authorities said.

The Alexander City Fire Department responded to a call at 4:01 p.m. a grandparent found the girl in a pool, fire chief Reese McAlister said. Fire medics immediately departed on the 20-minute trip and talked family members through CPR measures while en route, according to Capt. David Macoy, who said the girl was in the living room of the home when first responders arrived.

McAlister said the ACFD arranged to have a helicopter on standby as the girl was rushed to Russell Medical and Alexander City police cleared the ambulance through traffic lights. Her heartbeat was detected at Russell Medical before she was flown to Children’s of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham, where she later died, according to Tallapoosa County Sheriff Jimmy Abbett.

“We did everything we could,” Macoy said. “It’s tough to talk about.”

Macoy urged parents and guardians to make sure their children know how to swim.

“If you have a child who doesn’t know how to swim, there are classes they can take,” Macoy said.

The Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department is conducting an investigation into the incident, Abbett said.
