Former Alexander City Police Officer Michael Ford was sentenced to a total of 89 years Friday morning.
Circuit Judge Steve Perryman presided over the sentencing hearing.
Ford, 49, pleaded guilty Oct. 15 to one count of incest, one count of second-degree sexual abuse, three counts of second-degree sodomy and five counts of sexual abuse of a child less than 12 years old, according to Assistant District Attorney Jeremy Duerr with the Fifth Judicial Circuit.
Ford also pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree theft of property and one count of tampering with evidence.
Duerr said that Ford received five years for the charge of incest, and twelve months for both the charges of tampering with physical evidence and second-degree sexual abuse.
For the three counts of second-degree sodomy and five counts of sexual abuse of a child less than 12 years old, Ford was sentenced to 10 years for each count.
Ford was present during the hearing and addressed the court. However, Duerr said Ford offered no apology to any of the victims.
“I thought that it was odd that he just kept wanting to talk about himself and his problems,” Duerr said. “He never actually apologized to any of the victims.”
Duerr said the sentences will run consecutively and not concurrently, meaning each sentence will have to be served in full before beginning the next. It is not known what order he will serve the sentences.
“On the counts of sexual abuse of a child less than 12, Alabama law dictates that he is not eligible for probation, parole or good time for those 10 years,” Duerr said.
This means, Duerr said, that Ford faces a minimum of 50 years in jail – 10 years for each of the five counts of sexual abuse.
The judge also denied the defense attorney’s request for placement in a mental or psychiatric hospital. Ford will be placed in the custody of the Alabama Department of Corrections.
