Alternating rain and sun didn’t diminish the popularity of the Hackneyville Fireworks Bash on Saturday. Event attendees brought their tents and umbrellas to watch performers and participate in the bash’s events.

The seventh annual Hackneyville Volunteer Fire Department fundraiser had face painting, inflatables and live entertainment from Clay Barker, Patrick Barnett, Kevin Moon and Ashton Shepherd before the fireworks show.

Mellow Valley resident Larry Brown said this was the fourth time his family attended the event and called the atmosphere relaxing.

“We like to help support the community here and it’s always a good show and nice people to be around,” Brown said. “The sense of community has been a great draw to it.”

Junior Teen Miss Lake Martin Rihanna Greathouse, Tiny Miss Lake Martin Hazel Moody and Forever Miss Lake Martin Holly Ann Hubbard made an appearance at the event.

Retired Hackneyville fire chief David Jones said the department has 22 volunteer firefighters.

“We don’t get any money whatsoever,” Jones said. “It’s all volunteer and this is our main event we have every year to raise money to keep it up.”

The department raises $10,000 to $15,000 at the event, according to Jones.

“The main thing is it’s a family-oriented thing for children, adults (and) parents,” Jones said.

The fundraiser helps the department run its building and its trucks and takes a lot of planning to execute, according to fire department volunteer Angela Smith.

“We just built a new fire department this year,” Smith said. “It helps keep up the fire trucks and it’s something that is needed because it takes a lot more money than people realize to run a fire department. Nobody gets paid for doing it.”

The department also hosts an annual fish fry in May.
