Moon Taxi to headline Sun Festival concert finale

Moon Taxi, an American indie-progressive rock band, will headline the Fifth Annual Sun Festival concert on Saturday, July 22 at Strand Park in downtown Alexander City.

The Alexander City Chamber of Commerce has announced that Moon Taxi, an American indie-progressive rock band, will headline the Fifth Annual Sun Festival concert on Saturday, July 22 at Strand Park in downtown Alexander City.

“We are thrilled to have Moon Taxi as our headliner. Having a popular act like Moon Taxi, who has local roots in Birmingham, combined with moving the event to Strand Park is going to create an electric atmosphere and draw thousands of visitors to our downtown,” said Chamber President & CEO Ed Collari.

The winner of Band Battle, which will be held in Strand Park on Friday, July 21, will serve as the opening act for Moon Taxi on Saturday night. Gates will open at 6 p.m. with the concert beginning at 7 p.m.

Tickets are now available online at www.alexandercitychamber.com or at the Chamber of Commerce office located inside the Lake Martin Innovation Center at 175 Aliant Parkway. All seating is general admission and tickets are $20 in advance and $30 the day of the concert.

“This year, we’re moving the concert on Saturday night of Sun Festival to Strand Park and we just finalized a contract with Moon Taxi,” Collari said. “Our goal is to expose visitors to our community along with trying to draw a younger, more vibrant audience to our downtown. A band on the rise like Moon Taxi should draw from Auburn, Birmingham and will put on an excellent show.”

The members of Moon Taxi are no strangers to the stage. Hailing from Nashville, the five-piece formed in 2006 and set out to conquer the Southeast with their unforgettable live set. Nine years later, they’ve amassed more than 1,000 shows and released two albums, Cabaret (2012) and Mountains Beaches Cities (2013). The latter landed the band their first national late-night television appearances on the Late Show with David Letterman and Conan as well as multiple commercial and TV placements including BMW, Nashville, MLB, NFL and HBO Sports to name a few. With a rabid fan base under their belts, they’ve upped the ante this year to become a festival favorite with recent performances at Bonnaroo, Governor’s Ball, Wakarusa, Houston Free Press and upcoming appearances at Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits.

Sun Festival is the Chamber’s nine-day, community development and tourism initiative comprised of more than 50 individual events. It is designed to celebrate the lifestyles in the Alexander City and Lake Martin areas.

Sun Festival will kick off on Friday, July 14 with Friday on the Green at Russell Crossroads. The fun continues Saturday morning with the MainStreet Farmer’s Market and the all new Slip-n-Slide 5K in downtown Alexander City. Family Day at the Lake will take place on Sunday, July 16 at Wind Creek State Park and is open to the public.

Children’s events will take place each day throughout the week, while the evening events will consist of family friendly events including the Dawg Gawn Good Parade, Glow Golf at Lakewinds Golf Course and Community Worship Night at Benjamin Russell High School.

Additional events throughout the week include the Car Show, Motorcycle Ride and Show, On the Pontoon and a Cornhole Tournament. The complete schedule of events is being finalized and will be available at www.alexandercitychamber.com.
