Former Alexander City Mayor and current Lake Martin Area Economic Development Alliance executive director Don McClellan died early Wednesday morning after suffering a major heart attack Sunday night.

Former Alexander City Mayor Don McClellan died early Wednesday morning in an Opelika hospital two days after suffering a major heart attack, according to his granddaughter and a colleague.

McClellan never regained consciousness after being admitted to East Alabama Medical Center following his heart attack.

“Paw Paw has now passed. He is with the Lord,” his granddaughter, Madison McClellan, wrote on Facebook.

Denise Walls, who worked under McClellan as the Lake Martin Area Economic Development Alliance’s director of strategic planning and community development, posted a poignant tribute to McClellan on Facebook and concluded it by writing, “One of the greatest men that I will ever know. It has been an honor and a privilege Don. I love you and I already miss you.”

Walls said Tuesday doctors at East Alabama Medical Center had started a 16-hour procedure to warm McClellan after cooling his body to preserve brain activity and give him a chance to rest.

“They are worried that the warming up process will put more strain on his heart,” she said. “They said it’s not uncommon for people to code during this process.”

McClellan’s death marks the passing of a second Alexander City mayor in two months. Jim Nabors died in office on May 6 after emergency surgery to remove an intestinal blockage.
