Confirmed cases of the coronavirus continue to climb throughout the state as Alabama saw a 600-plus increase in the cumulative number of COVID-19 over the last 48 hours, according to the Alabama Department of Public Health.

As of 12:25 p.m. Wednesday, ADPH is reporting 12,699 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in the state which is an increase of 647 cases in the last 48 hours.

ADPH added a new category to its dashboard Friday which includes cases confirmed and test results in the last 14 days. There have been 4,062 cases confirmed in the last 14 days with 63,877 test results given. On Sunday, there were 88,102 tests reported so this number has decreased in the last 24 hours. Tallapoosa Publishers reached out to ADPH for an explanation for this.

ADPH spokesperson Arrol Sheehan provided this answer from ADPH's Dr. Karen Landers:

"(ADPH) dashboard updates on a regular basis. ADPH receives reports from multiple laboratories through multiple methods. As part of transmission of data, updating or reviewing, there will be times that a test report is sent to the department more than once. When this happens, the data has to be corrected. This is an ongoing process to refine data and ensure accuracy. Individual county numbers have been updated and may reflect corrections. Please note that all data is provisional and subject to change."

In the last 48 hours, Tallapoosa County added eight confirmed cases of COVID-19, now at 373. The county’s death count is still at 57.

Coosa County's confirmed case count actually decreased by one and is now at 33 with one death while Elmore County added 22 cases to now be at 219 confirmed cases. Elmore County now has seven COVID-19 deaths.

Statewide, there have been 514 COVID-19 deaths. ADPH reports only confirmed COVID-19 deaths. The criteria for death counts now include people who died with a positive COVID-19 laboratory test as well as individuals whose death certificates list COVID-19 as the cause of death.

Statewide, the ADPH is reporting 164,450 total tested. In Tallapoosa County, there have been 2,116 tests counted by ADPH, 243 in Coosa County and 2,157 in Elmore County.

There have been 1,754 hospitalizations across the state since March 13, according to ADPH.

Since March 13, there have been 522 patients in intensive care units and 309 on a ventilator. In the medical field, 1,754 healthcare workers in hospitals and doctors' offices have tested positive. When it comes to long-term care facilities, 808 employees and 1,235 residents have tested positive for COVID-19.
