Sun Festival is making some changes this year with a tykes and trucks event instead of a 5K, car show and motorcycle ride.
Alexander City Chamber of Commerce president Ed Collari said the tykes and trucks event will be on June 8 on Main and Calhoun streets from 9 a.m. to noon.
“We’ll have bulldozers, fire trucks and ambulances,” Collari said. “We’re going to get a helicopter. We’re also going to have a big inflatable 40-foot obstacle course.”
Collari said the event will be family friendly and hopes the changes will be well received.
“Opelika did one similar and we thought we’d use our resources and create one big event very similar, family friendly,” Collari said.
Sun Festival starts June 6 with a cornhole tournament at 5:30 p.m. at Coffee Corner on Main and The Wilson Brothers and Jason Tapley performing at 6 p.m. the Strand Sessions, according to Collari. The nine-day festival ends with Jazz Festival on June 14.
“A lot of the events are pretty consistent, maybe some of the days are switched around,” Collari said.
Alexander City Chamber of Commerce vice president of marketing and special events Kim Dunn said the Sun Festival is important for community engagement.
“We’re all in it together so you got to have that community buy in involvement civic involvement that really drives who we are home to ourselves and to the outside world,” Dunn said. “Like Ed said, we try to have something for every demographic so it’s fun. There are some people who you’ll see at every event. It’s great to see so many different faces.”
