Woman dies in crash on 280

Published Wednesday, March 10, 2010

A 24-year-old woman was killed early Wednesday morning when a van hydroplaned on U.S. 280 at the intersection of Old Dark Road in Alexander City.

Amia Lakia Dunklin died after she was ejected from a 1997 Ford Aerostar that was traveling east on the state highway, according to Alabama Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Martha Earnhardt.

Dunklin was not wearing a seat belt, according to the wreck report.

Earnhardt said the Opelika state trooper post responded to the scene after receiving an alert from the Alexander City Police Department. She said the speed of the van at the time of the wreck is unknown and the investigation is ongoing.

“The initial indication is the vehicle hydroplaned, ran off the roadway and struck an embankment,” Earnhardt said.

Earnhardt said Dunklin was a passenger in the van and there are no known injuries to the driver. She said Dunklin was transported to Russell Medical Center.
