Lake Martin Wild Game Cook-Off set for Saturday
Published Wednesday, March 10, 2010
Are you game for game?
If so, the Alabama Wildlife Federation has something for you.
The organization is teaming up with the Alabama National Guard for the sixth annual Lake Martin Wild Game Cook-Off Saturday at 6 p.m. at Bobby Scott’s farm on Elkahatchee Road.
Tommy Tidwell, coordinator for the cook-off, said the cook-off is one of the more popular events that AWF sponsors each year.
“We’ll usually have about 15 to 20 cook teams and the crowd shows up to eat,” Tidwell said. “Wild game typically has less fat and is leaner than other meats. It’s healthier to eat, not processed and doesn’t have the growth hormones that meat at the store has.”
The cook-off is divided into three categories for teams: wild game, fowl and fish.
“Some of the fish dishes could be local bass, crappie or catfish,” Tidwell said. “In the fowl category, cooks will bring dove, quail and wild turkey. Some will even bring wild hog, squirrel, rabbit in addition to venison in the game category.”
The teams will be awarded first through third places for each category and an overall winner will be determined by judges. Winners will advance to the state cook-off.
“It’s a lot of fun and we have a lot of great cooks,” Tidwell said. “The food is restaurant quality or better.”
