Lazybirds to perform March 25 at BRHS auditorium

Published Tuesday, March 2, 2010

Who would have thought that our local area would have had snow twice in as many weeks, and we may get more. So much excitement for everyone, it gives the children something new, and the adults’ have great photo opportunities. My neighbor across from my shop in Nixburg, Peggie Ott shared with me that each time it snows, she saves a plastic baggie of snow in her freezer. I didn’t ask what she plans to do with the collection, but I expect she may be saving it to show Grandson Cody Ott for his return from Guam.

Happy Birthday to Cara Milyn Channell of Alexander City, this is a special one as she turns 13 today becoming a teenager. Happy returns go out to Michael Hampton. He celebrates his birthday on March 7.

My friend Eddie Hampton attended the Dallas Brass concert last week at BRHS, and said it was an excellent show. Too cold for much right now, we hope to get back out as the weather breaks. If we are lucky that will happen in time for the next Alexander City Arts show. The next concert will be on Thursday, March 25, at BRHS featuring Lazybirds, more details will be forthcoming, be sure to get the date on your calendar, so you won’t miss it.

I am finishing up the organization for my Red Hat convention trip this Thursday. I am traveling with Kay Atkisson and Diane Davila of Wetumpka, and we will collect Barbara Sanderson in Montgomery on the way. This convention is organized by a red hat group in Tallahassee, Fla., and they always do such a great job. This year the theme is Mardi Gras with a costume ball on Saturday, and Friday night will be Cajun-style. A fun-filled weekend get-away, with a pajama breakfast on Saturday, and ‘farewell’ breakfast on Sunday morning. I have my things almost together ready for packing on the day before we leave.

My friend Debbie Powell is getting her greenhouse ready for spring growing at “Lazy Lucy’s” but I can tell you Debbie is not lazy at all, she works hard, as anyone has to when they grow plants. She did a wonderful job on her Jade plants, they got huge in the greenhouse and many were covered in blooms. She will be open this Saturday, looking for new homes for those lovely Jade’s, at a steal of a price, and she is just south of Seman right on Highway 9.

I have had e-mails from my Auntie Teresa, she and husband Ian live just outside of Oxford. Ian just had his four-month check-up at the hospital after his major heart problems with stents. He will go back for more tests in two weeks. He is doing as well as could be expected. Ian is still completing his last weeks of physical therapy which he has enjoyed, although he gets out of breath, he manages walking into the village quite well, and this gives him a nice breath of fresh air and good exercise. They have also had heavy amounts of snow in February, which has left the ground very soggy, much like ours here.

We had a wonderful Sunday grilled pork chop dinner with Terry and Debbie Powell. It is super to go out for a home-cooked meal that is delicious! Using the sunshine hours early that day for drying laundry and a few clean-up jobs outside.

Good News, we did save a hundred dollars over last months electric bill; so turning off everything you don’t need, the extra lights, and keeping the heating just warm enough has really helped. We know it is impossible for our house to stay snugly warm as it has too many drafts just because of the way it was built in 1842.

I know that spring must be just around the corner, and when it shows its face I will be so happy. The daffodils are all up in rows and will be in bloom this next week. My red camellias have been lovely, especially when draped in snow flakes. We have secured some vegetable seeds and will be getting them in as soon as the ground warms a little, after starting them on the screened porch. My compost heap has done really well, producing some great free dirt, and this will be a big help with spring plants. It is always tempting to buy plants each spring, but this season, I hope to make do with what I planted new last spring.

All good wishes go out to Johnette Walker for a speedy recovery. I understand she had a hospital stay recently.

In the early 1990’s my cousin Jacci Bishop came to visit several times, she always arrived during early to mid March and our weather was immediately warm and spring-like; I am in hopes that this weather will befall us by the week’s end.

I saw my fabulous hairdresser Tina Kendrick last week at Master’s Touch, so I could get ready for spring. I almost didn’t recognize Tina, she has been on a weight program through Dr. Poppov since the end of last summer, and she looks really great. Things only work if you have the right recipe and the will-power to stay at it.

Daylight Savings begins March 14, I can hardly wait!
