Gov. Riley to highlight annual luncheon

Published Friday, January 29, 2010

The year 2010 is going to be a very special year indeed. The Alexander City Chamber of Commerce is beginning its 100th year of continuous service to Alexander City.

To inaugurate our 100th anniversary year, we are planning our Chamber Annual Meeting for Friday, Feb. 19 from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Note the change in time from the usual evening meeting. The event will be at the Betty Carol Graham Technology Center on the campus of Central Alabama Community College. Gov. Bob Riley will be our special guest and keynote speaker.

This is an annual meeting you will not want to miss. The Chamber member cost is $25 per person. The Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors would also like to extend an invitation to this special gathering to the community at a cost of $35 per person.

Call or e-mail the Chamber office to reserve your seat. As always, we will recognize the Business Person of the Year, “Community Spirit” award recipient, Firefighter of the Year, Police Officer of the Year, Teacher of the Year and Chamber Ambassador of the Year.

Another activity that is now ongoing in Alexander City is Census 2010. Federal funding amounting to approximately $300 billion per year or $300 trillion over the next ten year period is awarded to states through federal grants administered by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs and through Community Development Block Grants based on census data. The grants awarded provide assistance to fund neighborhood rehabilitation projects, Title I grants to schools, and infrastructure projects just to name a few of the programs. No census information requires a social security number, credit card number, or other banking information. Any information gathered, other than numbers, is not made available to anyone. In fact, the information is held in secure, strict confidence for 72 years. “It’s In Our Hands,” Be Counted!

As always, if I, or any member of the Chamber staff can be of service to you, do not hesitate to contact us.

Marvin Wagoner is the President and CEO of the Alexander City Chamber of Commerce and may be reached at 256-234-3461 or mwagoner@charterinternet.com.
