What is this?
Get into Twain and get reading
Published Monday, January 25, 2010
Reading is one of the most essential activities we can do each day of the week, but it’s an activity that most of us don’t have much time to do each day.
The staff of the Adelia M. Russell Library is trying do something about that. The library held a ribbon cutting ceremony Friday to kickoff The Big Read, Alabama’s new reading program to encourage Alabamians of all ages to read more books.
To begin this venture, libraries across the state are receiving copies of Mark Twain’s “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” and they will have reading programs centered on the classic tale.
“Everybody needs to be reading all the time,” said Mayor Barbara Young. “This book is appropriate because it has a lot of humor and a lot of wisdom in it. I love Mark Twain and it is so important to get people reading again.”
Mayor Young should know all about this subject. She is a former schoolteacher and principal. Reading, whether it is learning how to read or comprehension of what you read, is one of the most important aspects of education and also life.
To help make it interesting, the library is hosting several events to help create interest in the book. The Children’s Library is having a Painting Fences contest. Storytellers also will drop by the library to help create interest in the book.
If you have never read Tom Sawyer or if you haven’t read it in a long time, we encourage you to pick the book up at the library or purchase the book on your own.
