Trojan golfers middle of pack at first tourney
Published Thursday, February 4, 2010
The Central Alabama golf team opened the spring season with a sixth-place effort at the Titan Winter Invitational, a disappointing finish by the Trojans’ own lofty standards.
CACC posted a 43-over-par total, 23 shots off the pace set by tournament champion Brevard CC, which hosted the tournament at Sun Tree Country Club in Melbourne, Fla., Monday and Tuesday.
“I think this was a good wake-up call for the guys,” head coach Dave Jennings said. “It let them know, ‘Hey, we’re not working hard enough.’ We did not play up to our potential, but I think this tournament is a good thing for us as a team.”
Brevard bested Johnson and Wales (Miami) by five shots in the 11-team field. Darton (Albany, Ga.) finished third despite having the tournament’s overall low individual scorer, Trey McQuaig, who closed at 1-over par (75-73-69).
CACC’s Zach Primavera was the front runner for the Trojans, finishing fourth place at 5-over. He shot 72-76-73 and was tied for the lead after round one.
Teammate Paul Harris, who carded rounds of 74-78-73 (+9), came in 10th place out of 79 players.
CACC shot 304 and 310 during a steady downpour in rounds one and two. In the final round, the Trojans fired a 293, five shots off of the best score of the day.
“I think that last round shows our guys have a lot of desire,” Jennings said. “After brutal weather in the first two rounds and not playing our best, it said a lot for us to come out and play well (in the last round).
“Our team has a lot of pride and the guys don’t want to be embarrassed,” Jennings said. “But, they were embarrassed when we left. We’ll work hard and turn it around. We want to peak in April and May, not in February.”
Barrett Milam (78-81-73) and Lewis Gruber (80-78-74) finished at 16-over in a tie for 31st for CACC. Chaz Fairbrother rounded out the Trojans’ line-up with a 40th-place finish at 19-over (80-78-77).
CACC’s next event, hosted by Faulkner State, comes March 1-2 at Rock Creek Country Club in Fairhope.
