Shooting victim in critical condition
Published Tuesday, September 29, 2009
The New Site woman who sustained gunshot wounds on Monday afternoon at a home on Hamlet Mill Road remained in critical condition after surgery at a Columbus, Ga., hospital.
“Right now she’s out of surgery and she’s somewhat responsive,” Tallapoosa County Sheriff Jimmy Abbett said. “She’s still in critical condition.”
The woman was critically injured after receiving at least one gunshot wound around 3:30 p.m. Monday in the 14500 block of Hamlet Mill Road. The home where she received the gunshot wound belongs to Charles Wayne Parrott, according to Abbett. Parrott was charged with arson last week in connection with a 2005 fire.
The New Site Police Department responded to the incident and was assisted by the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department, Alexander City Police Department, Alabama Department of Conservation, Alabama State Troopers, Tallapoosa EMS and New Site’s first responders.
The woman was transported to the hospital by a Life Flight helicopter that landed on the Horseshoe Bend High School football field.
The Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department is still investigating the case and Abbett declined to comment on the nature of the shooting and if the wounds were self-inflicted.
