Woman injured in shooting

New Site victim airlifted from HBHS field to Columbus, Ga., hospital after receiving gunshot wound

Published Monday, September 28, 2009

A New Site woman was airlifted from the Horseshoe Bend High School football field to a Columbus, Ga., hospital following an apparent shooting Monday afternoon on Hamlet Mill Road.

New Site Police Chief John McKelvey said the victim, who was identified as a white female, was critically injured after she apparently received at least one gunshot wound around 3:30 p.m. Monday in the 14500th block of Hamlet Mill Road.

“She was responsive as she was being treated on the scene,” McKelvey said. “She was transported by Life Flight to the Columbus hospital’s trauma center.”

McKelvey said he couldn’t release the identity of the victim until her family had been notified.

Horseshoe Bend principal Casey Davis said the school was offering assistance to law enforcement by allowing them to land the Life Flight helicopter on the football field, which is one of New Site’s designated landing zones.

“It did not involve anyone on campus or any of the students,” Davis said. “We just offered assistance to the sheriff.”

The New Site Police Department was assisted by the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department, Alexander City Police Department, Alabama Department of Conservation and Alabama State Troopers. Tallapoosa EMS and New Site’s first responders were also dispatched to the scene.

McKelvey said they are still investigating whether or not the gunshot wound was self-inflicted, but he didn’t wish to speculate on the cause of the incident at this time.

No suspects have been arrested in connection with the case.

McKelvey said the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department would be the lead investigating agency on the case.
