Man allegedly kidnaps mother

41-year-old Daviston man in custody after holding his parents at gunpoint Friday

A local man, who was reported to have held his parents hostage in their Tallapoosa County home before kidnapping his mother, spent the weekend in jail where he remains while awaiting a bond hearing.

James Bradley Perry, 41, of Drake Road in Daviston was arrested Friday afternoon and charged with kidnapping, two counts of unlawful imprisonment, two counts of domestic violence menacing and two counts of reckless endangerment.

Authorities were first notified of the incident at about 1 p.m. Friday when his father, who managed to escape from the New Site-area residence, called 911 from a neighbor’s home, Tallapoosa County Sheriff Jimmy Abbett said.

“He was in fear and he was able to escape from the residence,” Abbett said.

Abbett said he called on assistance from multiple agencies when authorities learned Perry, who was armed, was holding the couple against their will.

With assistance from the Alexander City Police Department Special Response Group, Tallapoosa County Narcotics Task Force, Alabama Department of Conservation and New Site Police Department, the Sheriff’s Department entered the home but found that Perry had already left the scene.

“The information we had was that he was in the house,” Abbett said. “We used (the officers) make entry into the house after we developed a plan.”

Authorities believed Perry forced his mother into his 2000 White Ford Ranger and drove to a relative’s home in Wedowee. That’s where the incident concluded peacefully when Wedowee Police arrived to arrest Perry.

“(The family), being very alert about the situation, contacted the local police,” Abbett said.

Authorities are still searching for answers in the case as the investigation continues.

“At this time we don’t know what the motive is,” Abbett said. “We’re still working on it.”
