BRHS wins county volleyball tourney

Published Monday, September 7, 2009

The Benjamin Russell volleyball team defeated Dadeville and Horseshoe Bend on Saturday in New Site to win the Tallapoosa County Tournament.

The Lady Wildcats (10-5) started the morning by defeating Dadeville in three games — 25-19, 25-22, 25-20 — to move on and face the host Lady Generals.

HBHS, who had won its fifth match out of six to start the season Thursday against Dadeville, played well according to BRHS head coach Pam Robinson, but couldn’t upset the Lady Wildcats. BRHS won by scores of 25-16, 25-16 and 25-14,

“We were a little slow in the Dadeville game, so I had a talk with the seniors,” Robinson said. “I said there are only six of you, and at least four of you are going to be playing at all times. I told them if they would be vocal and communicate that it would make an impact on the whole team.”

Robinson said her squad did just that, and the intensity level was much better against Horseshoe Bend (5-2).

BRHS will welcome the Auburn Lady Tigers to Alexander City today for a Class 6A, Area 8 match.

The Lady Wildcats have already defeated Auburn once in tournament play this season. They also have wins over Wetumpka and Stanhope Elmore, the other two teams in the area.

“A win (today) would be huge,” Robinson said. “The home court advantage is big and important, but for pyschological reasons it would help, as well. To know we can beat our main opponents is good for us.”

The varsity match is scheduled to start around 6:30 p.m.

Dadeville (4-7) takes on Class 3A, Area 7 foe Beulah and Sylacauga today at home. HBHS (5-2) will travel to Woodland on Thursday.
