Lineville Aggies run over Generals in region triumph

Published Saturday, September 5, 2009

The Horseshoe Bend Generals had two opponents in their game Friday night in Lineville; the LHS Aggies and themselves.

Missed opportunities were abundant for the Generals in a 27-7 defeat in their first region game of the season.

Horseshoe Bend head coach Jason Frnaklin pointed to missed touchdown passes as one thing that helped to swing the momentum in the Aggies’ direction all night.

“You have to be able to capitalize on opportunities against good teams,” a visibly frustrated Franklin said. “That’s what makes you a good team.”

Horseshoe Bend was able to capitalize with a strong start to begin the game. The Generals’ first play from scrimmage was a 45-yard connection from quarterback Josh Price to Cody King. Price then threw to Kendall Thomas for a gain of eight yards as Horseshoe Bend marched the ball down the field.

The Generals scored on the eighth play of that opening drive with an 11-yard Price pass to Avery Thornton.

The Aggies tied the score on the ensuing drive that spanned 61 yards and ended with a 21-yard run by Charles Bass.

“We let them play smash mouth football and they were able to swing the momentum back in their favor,” Franklin said.

Price completed two passes and was sacked for a loss of 7 yards during the Generals’ next drive that ended in a three and out.

The Aggies were able to capitalize and break the tie on the next drive. The offense spanned 44 yards in five plays to score on a 3 yard run by Jonathan Glenn. The Aggies led the Generals 14-7 with 1:50 left in first quarter.

Horseshoe Bend running back Brandon Thomas broke a 13-yard run on the ensuing drive, but the Generals failed to pick up a first down and were forced to punt.

Lineville quarterback Demetrius Lindsey threw a pick to Kendall Thomas on a first down play during the ensuing Aggies’ drive. Lindsey scored on a 1-yard run to end the Aggies’ next drive after a Generals punt.

Horseshoe Bend missed an opportunity during the team’s next drive with a dropped pass on a third-and-10 play from the 34-yard line.

Lineville scored the final points of the game with 58 seconds left before halftime courtesy of another 1-yard run by Lindsey. Parker Morrow missed the extra point try and the Aggies led 27-7 at the half.

The Generals’ defense tightened in the second half and kept the Aggies out of the end zone.

“I’m proud of the way the defense played in the second half,” Franklin said. “They just kept fighting.”

Price went 12-25 for 93 yards and a touchdown. Brandon Thomas was held to only 39 yards on eight carries for the game.

Horseshoe Bend rushed for a total of 54 yards on 19 carries as a team. Caleb Willoughby recovered a Lindsey fumble for the Generals in the fourth quarter. Gage Whitard intercepted a Lindsey pass in the third quarter.

Lineville combined for a total of 265 yards on the ground with all four scores coming off of running plays.

Glenn was the leading rusher with 16 carries for 96 yards and one touchdown.

Horseshoe Bend (1-1, 0-1) plays Ranburne Friday night in their home opener in New Site in week three.
