PD: no 'hit list' at middle school

Investigation reveals rumors were unfounded

Published Friday, October 30, 2009

Rumors of a suspected “hit list” compiled by an Alexander City Middle School student are unfounded, according to the Alexander City Police Department.

ACPD Cpl. William Grant confirmed after an investigation in to the matter Friday that there was no “hit list” and the rumors started as part of an argument on the school bus.

“It kind of spiraled from a boyfriend and girlfriend breakup,” Grant said. “(The argument) never got physical. It was more of a verbal thing.”

Grant said harassment charges could possibly still be pending in the case, but no arrests have been made at this time.

Rumors of the “hit list” surfaced late Thursday when a thread was posted on the online forums at www.alexcityoutlook.com. A concerned parent also sent an e-mail to The Outlook late Wednesday. The parent could not be reached for comment by press time Friday.

ACMS principal Tracy McGhee did not wish to comment about specifics of the situation, but did say the school was handling it appropriately.

“We’ve been working with the central office staff,” McGhee said. “We are taking appropriate action.”
