Sparks brings message to Tallapoosa County Democratic Party meeting

Published Thursday, November 19, 2009

Ron Sparks, a 2010 gubernatorial candidate for the Democratic primary, spoke in Alexander City Thursday about how he plans to carry the state through the ongoing economic crisis, if elected governor.

Sparks stayed on key with his campaign message while at the meeting. He told the crowd he supports using a state lottery to fund education, including the public option in health care reform, and added that he backs the federal government’s stimulus package.

“What is on the minds of people right now is how are we going to educate our children, how are we going to take care of ourselves and how are we going to take care of our parents,” Sparks said. “I don’t have all the answers, but I can tell you this, there will not be anyone who will work harder than I will.”

Sparks, like residents of Tallapoosa County, has watched as free trade agreements have eliminated mill jobs in his hometown of Fort Payne. But he said taking advantage of free trade agreements will be key to Alabama’s future economic well-being.

“We have to continue to be aggressive in trade,” Sparks said.

Sparks, now in his second term as Alabama’s Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries, said the state should outsource its natural resources to develop and produce alternative fuel to create new jobs.

“Alabama could be a leader when it comes to alternative fuels because two-thirds of our state is wooded and that is where alternative fuel is headed,” Sparks said.

Sparks began his political career at the age of 24 when he was elected as county commissioner. He worked as a businessman in Fort Payne and was appointed director of the DeKalb County 911 system before being sworn in as the Alabama Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries in 2003.

“I want to be governor because I love this state and I want to do something to give people hope who may not have hope,” Sparks said.
