Police net 2 on burglary charges
Published Friday, November 6, 2009
A traffic stop by the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department in Dadeville on Monday morning led to the arrest of two men that were wanted in connection with 28 burglaries in the Holiday Shores area.
Monday’s traffic stop led to an investigation of Justin Andrew Hammock, 22, of 243 Lee Road in Waverly and Michael Andrew McConnell Jr., 26, of 1289 Ty Court in Auburn. Hammock and McConnell were arrested the following day and charged with first, second and third degree theft of property, third degree burglary, first degree criminal trespass and second and third degree criminal mischief.
“Due to our investigators we got a break in the investigation the other night that led to the arrest of these suspects,” said Tallapoosa County Sheriff Jimmy Abbett.
The burglaries took place between May and October of this year and the men were responsible for $13,000 of stolen property and $9,000 of property damage, according to a statement released by the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department. Some of the stolen property has been returned to its owners.
“I can’t say enough about the work of our investigative unit,” Abbett said. “They spent countless hours on this investigation.”
Twenty-eight criminal cases were closed by the arrest with a total of 50 felony charges and 52 misdemeanor charges, according to the sheriff’s department’s statement.
Ten additional cases, including three for arson, will be presented to the Tallapoosa County Grand Jury.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Department and the Auburn Police Department are assisting with the case and additional charges are expected.
Hammock and McConnell are in the Tallapoosa County Jail awaiting bond.
