Dianne Sherrill will share her love for gospel music and Alexander City as she comes “home” to Alexander City next weekend to perform three concerts.
“It feels absolutely great to be coming to Alex City,” said Sherrill. “I love coming home because there’s nothing like Alex City for me.”
Sherrill will begin the day with a concert at West Side Baptist Church at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, June 28, followed by Calvary Heights Baptist Church at 11 a.m. and conclude with an evening concert at Flint Hill United Methodist Church at 6 p.m.
“I have heard a lot of really good things about her,” said the Rev. Dee Dowdy, pastor of Flint Hill United Methodist Church. “I have never met her but I have talked with her on the phone and I can tell she is really on fire for the Lord.”
Originally from Alexander City, Sherrill has lived in Nashville since 1970. She was a successful country music singer for 30 years. She has performed on HeeHaw, the Nashville Network, at the Ryman Auditorium and The Grand Ole Opry and has backed up many performers including George Jones and Ronnie Milsap.
Sherrill is currently very involved in the bridge ministry to feed the homeless headed by Kent and Candy Christmas.
”Each Tuesday night at 6 p.m. we feed the homeless under the Jefferson Street Bridge,” Sherrill said. “I’ve been doing it for three years. It means so much and is a way to give back what God has given me.”
She was called into a ministry of gospel music nine years ago, which allows more opportunities for sharing her music and testimony.
“She is from Alexander City and she has such a powerful testimony about God in her life,” said Dowdy. “I think not only will it be great music but also her testimony will touch many.”
The concerts are free and the community is invited to attend either event.
“I want to thank my friend, Charlene Brown, for coordinating events in this area,” Sherrill said.
Sherrill is looking forward to seeing and reminiscing with friends she hasn’t seen in a long time.
“I love seeing my friends and my 84-year-old mother, Doris Sherrill, is doing well and will be traveling with me. She is also looking forward to seeing everyone,” Sherrill said. “We are not getting any younger and need to see each other when we can.”
