City to work on water lines on Cherokee Road

Customers along Cherokee Road can expect a water shortage on Friday.

The Alexander City Water Department will be installing a valve for a new water main at the corner of Cherokee and Dadeville roads. The installation will require officials to turn off water in that area, a fact that will affect business and residences that are locate between Radney Funeral Home and Airport Boulevard on Cherokee Road.

“Every year we have to change some of these new lines,” Danny Hanson with the Water Department said. “Hopefully, one day, we will get them all replaced.”

Hanson said some of the water lines have not been replaced since the 1940s, but the lines on Cherokee demanded immediate attention.

In recent months, the main on Cherokee, which is located under the road, began to burst periodically. The problem caused extensive labor and repair efforts, as workmen had to dig the water main up from beneath the pavement and then repave the upturned portion of the road.

“It costs us so much that it was cheaper in the long run to go ahead and replace the line.” Hanson said.

The waterline originally ran beside the road but when hat portion of Cherokee was widened to form a four-lane, the road covered the waterline. Over the past two weeks, crews have been on site with heavy equipment replacing the waterline along Cherokee that connects to the main.

Hanson said, the project, which costs $43,000, is being funded by the city. Officials believe water should be cut off between the hours of 7 a.m. and 12 noon on Friday. After that time water service will return to normal.
