Check out the new dress code

Published Monday, June 1, 2009

The Tallapoosa County Board of Education took on a very sensitive issue when it adopted its new “Dress for Success” dress code that goes into effect beginning this fall.

There’s no question that when students wear inappropriate clothing, it causes problems for teachers and administrators, as well as distractions that detract from time spent learning. There’s no arguing that schools have one purpose: to teach our children. So the school system is right to do what it can to head off problems.

That said, changes in dress codes almost always cause turmoil.

Students don’t like to be told what to wear.

Parents don’t like to be told to buy new wardrobes for their children.

It’s one of those touchy situations that is best dealt with early and openly.

Under the new dress code, all clothing must be made up of solid colors. Patterns, insignias and emblems on the solid color clothing are limited to a quarter-sized logo on the left chest of the shirts. Sunglasses and hats are not allowed, shirts must have sleeves and be worn tucked in, shorts and skirts can be only two inches above the knees, and piercings are limited to ears only.

We think the County School Board is absolutely on target in holding a public forum to discuss this dress code. Superintendent Phillip Baker said during the meeting, students will model clothing that meets the new dress code to help clear up confusion.

We encourage all parents and students involved to attend the meeting at 6 p.m. tonight in the Dadeville High School auditorium.
