Tax-free weekend helps us all
Published Thursday, July 9, 2009
In a month, on the weekend of Aug. 7-9, the cities of Alexander City, Dadeville and Goodwater and Coosa County, will participate in Alabama’s tax-free shopping “holiday.”
While we understand that taxes fund our local governments and school districts, we also feel like a few tax-free days will do more good than harm in our community.
Because this tax-free shopping weekend falls at a time when many parents will be purchasing school supplies and new clothes, and because the tough economic times has forced many families to tighten their belts a notch or two, we feel like this tax holiday is appropriate. This year, when many area schools have adopted a dress code that will require parents to purchase new clothes for their school-age children, we suspect the tax-free shopping will be especially appreciated by families with young children.
On the receiving end of the shopping experience, area businesses that have experienced a tough financial year will likely get a shot in the arm shoppers who are eager to make their dollars go as far as possible.
In all, we see this as a win-win for shoppers and businesses in our community.
And we appreciate the fact that our local government officials have recognized that fact and voted in favor of tax-free shopping during the weekend of Aug. 7-9.
