Central-Coosa hires two football assistants

Published Wednesday, July 1, 2009

New Central-Coosa head football coach Rick Cahalane has added two new coaches to the Cougar staff.

Nick Maddaloni, who had been at Hueytown, will be the new offensive coordinator and will coach quarterbacks and running backs. The new offensive line coach is Chad McBride, who comes to Central after two years at Oak Mountain and two years at Prattville.

Cahalane said he wanted to get back to a more traditional offense and out of throwing the football as much, and that will definitely happen with Maddaloni controlling the offense.

“Nick runs the Wing-T,” Cahalane said. “We’re going to get back to the huddle and running the football. We got to looking around at our personnel and notice we have a lot of people that can play in the backfield. This is the best way to give those guys the ball and let them make something happen.”

McBride was suggested to Cahalane by a few coaches, including Prattville’s Jamey DuBose.

“I didn’t know Chad but a few coaches recommended him to me,” Cahalane said. “Coach DuBose at Prattville was one who thought very highly of him and told me he would be great. Both these guys are young and should bring a lot of energy to the program. We had our first staff meeting the other day and everyone seems to fit together nicely.”

Cahalane said he is happy with how the summer is progressing. He said turnout continues to get better and also that he’s impressed with the attitude of the Cougar players.

“Just from watching everybody in the weight room, I am really pleased with the team right now,” he said. “These kids really want to win, and you can see it. They are some of the nicest and most polite kids I’ve been around. A couple of more guys trickle in each time, and we still need to get all the athletes out. We’ve got some work to do, but with some time, we can we some ballgames.”

Another one of Cahalane’s assistants, Shundell Russaw, has been a big part of this off-season, as well, Cahalane said. Russaw, who is the Cougar head baseball coach, leads the wide receivers and secondary on the football field.

“Coach Russaw is just a class gentleman,” he said. “I wouldn’t be where I’m at today with these kids if it wasn’t for him. He’s great with the kids. They listen to him and respect him. He’s been very instrumental in helping us get better and is just a tremendous asset to Central High School.”
