Horseshoe Bend beats Vincent 28-14 in jamboree, Dadeville falls to Elmore County 14-7
Published Friday, August 21, 2009
The Horseshoe Bend Generals ran through the Vincent Yellow Jackets Friday in New Site by a score of 28-14.
HBHS was originally scheduled to face Notasulga, but a last-minute conflict forced head coach Jason Franklin to find a new opponent.
“I thought we did well for a jamboree game,” Franklin said. “We looked really good early on, but we had some mental lapses in the middle. We got some turnovers deep in their territory, but we weren’t able to capitalize. I was a little disappointed in that, but outside of a few mix-ups, it was a good night.”
Josh Price played all game at quarterback, though most starters saw only three quarters. Franklin said he was “efficient” and had very few incompletions. Cody King caught a touchdown pass from Price for the only score through the air.
Brandon Thomas picked up where he left off last season and scored multiple rushing touchdowns on the night.
In addition to King’s interception, Chad Moore also picked off a pass from Vincent, which went 5-5 last season. The Generals forced a couple of fumbles, as well.
“The defense came out ready to play,” Franklin said. “We caused some bad things to happen. We could have put it away a lot earlier on offense, but that’s what these games are for, to get a chance to see where you need work.”
HBHS opens the season next week at Wadley.
Elmore County slips past Tigers 14-7 in Dadeville
The Dadeville Tigers opened on a bit of a sour note, falling to Elmore County 14-7.
The starters didn’t play outside of the first quarter. After Elmore County converted a long 3rd down and eventually went up 7-0, DHS quarterback Kyle Caldwell hooked up with Kieran Sturdivant for a 34-yard score, which turned out to be the only points of the night.
Tailbacks Quen Pearson and Clint Westbrook received just a couple of carries in the game.
Among the back-up quarterbacks who saw a lot of time were Josh Crayton, Derrin Foster and Kaleb Beck. The No. 9 Tigers battle No. 2 Reeltown next Thursday
