Hope to see you at the MainStreet Auction

Published Thursday, August 13, 2009

Before your back-to-school schedule fills up, make your plans now for Saturday, Aug. 15, as the world famous Alexander City MainStreet Auction hits the town once again. In case you’ve never been to the event, allow me to educate you through the most remedial of resources: The ABCs.

A is for “Aliant Bank.” The Aliant headquarters have been the Auction’s locale the last few years and the setting could not be better.

B is for “Buy it now.” Don’t want to wait until the Auction is over? Scared you’ll be outbid at the last second? The new ‘Buy it now’ feature allows you to get your item as early as you’d like.

C is for “Cash, credit or credit.” Bring your Benjamins or rack up AMEX points; it’s your choice.

D is for “Donations.” If you have something to donate, let the MainStreet office know. It’s great exposure!

E is for “Entertainment.” As always, there will be live music for your enjoyment.

F is for “Food.” Wanda L’amoureux is catering event this year and the menu is fantastic.

G is for “Generosity.” The entire MainStreet staff appreciates all those who have donated and attended in the past.

H is for “Highway 280.” The Aliant offices are conveniently located right off of the highway.

I is for “Informal.” Cut-offs aren’t encouraged, but no need for a tuxedo either.

J is for “July.” At least Aug. 15 is usually cooler than July 15, right?

K is for “Kid-free.” It’ll be fun to have an adult night out. I am sure many of you have earned it.

L is for “eLevator.” There is a nice, big elevator to take you to and from the top floor.

M is for “MainStreet Auction.” In case you forgot, we are discussing the MainStreet Auction.

N is for “Night.” The event runs from 6 until 9 p.m.

O is for “Open bar.” This fact by itself is enough reason to come.

P is for “Pretty pictures.” There are many local artists who have donated their works for you to bid upon.

Q is for “(Q)fun.” The Q is silent.

R is for “Restaurants.” Mama Ella’s, Cecil’s, J.R.’s Sports Grill and Five Star Plantation are just some of the establishments that have donated gift cards.

S is for “Sports memorabilia.” There are BRHS tailgating packages, AU autographed footballs and ‘Bama facility tours available for bid.

T is for “Tickets.” Tickets can be purchased from several Alex City merchants or from the MainStreet office (329-9227).

U is for “Umbrella.” There’ll be no need for one as Aliant Bank has blessed us with a roof over our heads

V is for “Victory.” It’s always fun to beat out a fellow bidder at the last second.

W is for “Walter Coley.” Walter will be the live auctioneer for the 75th consecutive year (or maybe it just seems that way).

X is for “X-Ray.” If you need one, go to Russell Hospital. MainStreet can’t help you.

Y is for “You.” You need to be there to help make this event successful. After all, MainStreet’s goal is to improve your community.

Z is for “Zinfandel.” Yes, ladies, there will be wine.

So that’s it. Everything you need to know about the auction in 26 little letters.

We’ll see you on Aug. 15!
