Let’s go shopping today
Published Friday, August 7, 2009
Today is a good day to go shopping.
This morning when the shop doors open, Alexander City, Dadeville, Goodwater and Coosa County are participating in the Tax Free Holiday that is going on in many areas of Alabama this weekend.
It’s a perfect day to get out and do some back-to-school shopping in our community.
“We’re hoping people will stay home to shop,” said Alexander City Mayor Barbara Young. “We’re in critical times right now and the city needs to do what it can to help its citizens.”
What the city did is suspended sales tax on a number of items … but not all. For instance, Tallapoosa Publishers still turning in sales tax on all the newspapers sold in stores and news racks today. But many items of clothing and computers – just the ticket for students gearing up for classes – will be tax free if purchased this weekend.
Nationwide, experts who track this sort of thing have said that so far, back-to-school shopping is below average this year. That doesn’t seem to be the case in Alexander City this weekend. The Outlook has reported that a number of area store owners are anticipating heavy traffic today.
So when you finish reading today’s edition, get out there and prove them right.
Shop at home.
