Great expectations for Lady GeneralsPublished 10:23am Wednesday, August 27, 2014
The Horseshoe Bend Lady Generals volleyball team is looking for big things in 2014.
After a productive summer camp down by the Gulf of Mexico, HBHS is expecting to use the positive strides from the event as a propellant into the season.
“We’re very excited about this group and its potential,” said HBHS volleyball coach Allison Franklin. “We went to a camp at the University of West Florida this summer and competed very well there. We’re hoping to keep that momentum going into the season.”
The Lady Generals have seven seniors on the squad this season. Loaded with experience at every position, Franklin said the team is already chomping at the bit to get underway.
“We’ve got experience at setter, experience with our hitters and with our passers,” Franklin said. “So, it ought to be a good year for us. The team has a great attitude, and they’ve really bonded as a group. They support each other, and we’re excited about making it happen on the court.”
Waiting for the Lady Generals will be uncharted waters in area play, as Thorsby and Fayetteville are the new area opponents for HBHS in 2014.
Admittedly, Franklin said, the team isn’t sure exactly what caliber of opponent awaits them, but she said the team is ready for whatever challenge that comes its way.
“They aren’t teams that we typically play, so we don’t know what to expect,” Franklin said. “You never really know what you have until you get out there and play.”
Attacking should be the name of the game for the Lady Generals this year. According to Franklin, most of the senior tenure is concentrated at hitter. As such, she’s looking for explosive things from that position.
“With the experience we have at our setter position, we really expect our hitters to be more productive,” Franklin said. “But we’ve been practicing against each other, and we’re ready to play somebody else.”
HBHS opens its season at home against Clay-Central on Sept. 4.
