Pre-registration available for Sun Festival Glow Run

Published 5:44pm Friday, July 11, 2014

A week remains until the Sun Festival Glow Run, and there is still time for runners to save some money and reserve a T-shirt.

Chamber president and CEO Ann Rye said registration can be done on the day of the event, which is slated for July 19.

“You can pre-register or register the day of at 8 p.m. in Strand Park at the glow tent,” Rye said. “We really encourage early registration to be sure you get a T-shirt in a size you want plus you save $5.”

The race costs $25 for pre-registration, which can be done at the Chamber of Commerce or online at www.active.com. Registration the day of the 5K will be $30.

“Runners get a short sleeve t-shirt with the glow run logo on the front and ‘Gotta run’ written on the back,” Rye said. “You also get a glow necklace and glow bracelet.”

Rye said the there will also be additional glow bracelets and necklaces available for purchase and that runners are encouraged to come decked out in all the glow paraphernalia that they want.

“Last year we had more than 180 runners, but we expect to increase that number this year because we moved it to a Saturday night,” Rye said. “That allows more people from out of town in the active.com running network to come out and participate in the race.”

Skyler Umrigar will be providing music before the event to help get people pumped up for the night run and will also be hosting the after party.

“He will be doing a light show and mixing some tunes,” Rye said. “Everyone should have a good time.”

Runners will be treated to bananas, granola bars and water following the race.

Rye said Strand Park will be decorated with LED balloons and lights, and that this year’s run will feature a more illuminated path.

“Last year, we heard from some runners that a part of the path was a little dark,” Rye said. “We actually changed the path this year, and will have glow rope and lighting along the whole trail.”

Runners will be treated to a surprise from the Alexander City Fire Department following the race and will be given their time once they cross the finish line.

Rye said they welcome serious competitors, those planning on walking the route and everything in between.

The race will begin and end at Strand Park. For more information, call the chamber at 256-234-3461.
