Lady ‘Cats win at sub-statePublished 10:05am Wednesday, May 7, 2014
The Benjamin Russell Lady Wildcats are on their game when it comes to the links.
They’ll look to keep it going when they head to the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail In Prattville to vie for the Class 5A state championship after winning the Class 5A South Sub-State championship this past Monday in Montgomery.
Playing for the Lady ‘Cats was Hayden Scales, MacKenzie Chapman, Hannah Sharpe and Anne Marie Wendling.
“I’m beyond ecstatic for the girls,” said BRHS girls golf coach Mandi Durr. “I’m so excited and so proud of their ability to persevere. It would have been easy for them to give up, but they didn’t.”
Durr credited a strong start, team resiliency and a focus on the little things for the girls’ victory.
“The day was all about us,” Durr said. “We were relaxed and having fun out there. We went out, and we played our game. We had a strong front nine, and when we made the turn you could see a little slump in our shoulders. I told them it’s yours if you want it, and they wanted it. Our short game was where we made up all of our strokes.
With the team set to go for the state title, Durr said it’s a testament to how strong the golf program has become.
“To see this program where it is now from four years ago, it shows the dedication and the work ethic that these girls have,” she said.
