Honor loved ones with Relay lumniariesPublished 7:15pm Tuesday, April 29, 2014
Luminaries at Tallapoosa County’s May 9 Relay for Life event will offer the opportunity to honor cancer’s survivors and victims, said The Cancer Center’s director Mabry Cook.
“It’s a great way to honor someone who has battled cancer and a great way to support the efforts for a cure,” Cook noted.
Luminary bags can be purchased for $5 each at The Cancer Center, adjacent to Russell Medical Center on U.S. Highway 280 in Alexander City. Purchasers can decorate the bags if they choose, personalizing them with the names of loved ones who have won or lost or are continuing to fight battles with cancer.
The bags will be filled with sand and lights during the May 9 Relay for Life event at the Charles E. Bailey, Jr. Sportplex in Alexander City. They will ring the track during a luminary ceremony that is scheduled to begin at dusk.
The event also will include a variety of activities for children and adults, beginning with a survivors’ reception and inflatables for kids at 5 p.m. Among other children’s activities, there will be face painting and train rides in the park. Musical entertainment will be provided throughout the evening, featuring Kowaliga Idol winner Callie Knight, Raised in Glory and McCoy Smith.
There will be a drawing for the winner of a pontoon boat (raffle tickets available at Russell Medical Center) at 8 p.m., along with a balloon release and fireworks to end the evening.
“It’s all an effort to call attention to the fight for a cure and an opportunity to donate to that effort,” Cook said.
