Dispatchers make a difference

Published 8:17pm Wednesday, April 16, 2014

Dear Editor,

I am writing concerning the Telecommunication Operator recognition week.
I am a retired 32 year law enforcement veteran. All too often, I received credit for a job “well done” when in reality, it was the dispatcher who obtained the who, what, when, where and why before I even showed up at the scene of the crime. Often times, I was able to make an arrest because when I called in a license plate for information, the dispatcher determined that the registered owner was wanted or was subject to search, or kept me safe by notifying me that the person I was contacting had a violent history. All this being done without being asked. The great majority of dispatchers that I had the pleasure to work with were professionals who never got the recognition that they deserved.
A belated thank you to all dispatchers. You do make a difference!
