Lady ‘Cats fall to Panthers in final home match of season

The Benjamin Russell Lady Wildcats tennis team lost their final regular-season home match to Smiths Station 8-1.
With the set back, BRHS’ girls now stand at 5-5. They finished their sectional slate undefeated.
Against Smiths Station, Benjamin Russell No. 1 girls singles player Rosie Lamberth won her match.
“It was a good win for Rosie,” said BRHS girls tennis coach Tony Franklin. “She fell behind early, but she picked her game up. I was glad to see her keep fighting.”
With the regular season finished, the Lady ‘Cats turn their attention to the sectional championships.
According to Franklin, anything less than a victory would be a failure as BRHS’ girls are the defending champions.
“I feel good about our chances,” Franklin said. “We’ve beaten every team in our section so far, and most of our girls are going in as No. 1 seeds. I’d be very disappointed if we don’t win.”
In spite of the team’s success against their area opponents, Franklin said past victories shouldn’t dictate how the Lady Wildcats approach their sectional title defense and added that he considered the slate wiped clean in terms of wins and losses.
“We have to stay focused,” Franklin said. “We have to realize that we still have to play. Sure, we’ve beaten them this year, but those matches have been played, and they are in the past.”
Pending weather, BRHS will attempt to repeat as sectional champion on Tuesday at Carroll-Ozark High School.
