BRHS downs Smiths Station

The Benjamin Russell Wildcats boys tennis team closed their regular season with two wins.
After outlasting Valley 5-4 to remain unbeaten in sectional play earlier this week, the Wildcats downed Smiths Station 7-2.
BRHS (7-4, 4-0 sectional) swept all doubles matches. The Wildcats’ No. 1 doubles team, Matthew Brown and Chris Cunningham, were dominant, winning 10-2.
“We played pretty good,” said BRHS boys tennis coach Wesley Coleman.
In the closest match of the doubles play, BRHS No. 3 team Logan Turner and Jamarez Hall won 10-8 via tiebreaker. After wrapping up sectional play undefeated and sending the BRHS seniors (Brown, Cunningham and Turner) off with a win in their last home match, Coleman said he feels the team is peaking at the right time.
“I feel like we’re playing really well right now,” he said. “This was a big week for us. We needed some match play and some court time, and we got it. We had three matches this week as opposed to one match last week.”
In BRHS’ other match, they lost at Sylacauga 8-1.
Next up for the Wildcats will be a chance to defend their sectional title.
BRHS will head to Carroll-Ozark for sectional championship play this coming Thursday.
“I like our chances,” Coleman said. “If we keep playing the way we are playing, I think we have a shot to make a run at it and win it again.”
