Fish for a Cure to raise funds for American Cancer SocietyPublished 6:03pm Thursday, April 3, 2014
An upcoming event is set to bring in local anglers to cast their line for a cure.
The Fish for a Cure bass fishing tournament will be April 19 at Wind Creek State Park from safe daylight to 2 p.m. weigh-in.
Coosa County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Franklin Keel, one of the event’s organizers, said funds raised from the tournament will support Coosa County and the American Cancer Society.
“It’s for C.O.A.C.H. – Cancer Outreach And Community Hope – and part of the money goes to the American Cancer Society and part of it stays in the county,” Keel said. “This is our third tournament. We’re going to give away door prizes, and right now we’ve got about $4,000 in payback money.”
Registration is $100 per boat and an optional $10 big fish pot, with up to two people per boat. Anglers can register by picking up a form at Fish Tales Bait and Tackle or can register the day of the tournament beginning around 4:30 a.m.
There will be guaranteed payouts for five places with a first-place minimum of $1,200.
There will also be $100 prizes for the top finishing adult-child team and male-female team.
The tournament will also have door prizes for all registrants.
“Everybody that fishes gets a ticket, and then at the end we will draw out of the hat for the prizes one at a time,” Keel said. “We have reel-and-rod combos, tackle bags, tackle packages with lures, boat batteries and a bunch more.”
There is a five fish per boat limit, and a complete list of rules can be obtained from Fish Tales Bait and Tackle.
“The money is going toward a good cause, and we’ve got a good payout. Fishermen often look for a reason to go fishing, and this a good reason,” Keel said.
