‘Cats track team lands back-to-back top-3 finishesPublished 10:11am Thursday, March 20, 2014
The Benjamin Russell track team claimed top-3 finishes in its most recent meets, finishing as the runner up in the Sylacauga Meets and coming in third at the Beauregard Relays.
The Sylacagua Meets were as close as they could have been, as BRHS lost to Anniston by one point (123-122).
“We scored in all but four events,” said BRHS track coach Cecil Holinquest. “We had a strategy to put kids in place to do well, but one of our kids fell ill and wasn’t able to compete in an event.”
Following that outing, BRHS looked to bounce back at the Beauregard Relays. Despite strong individual performances, the Wildcats found themselves behind host Beauregard and second-place Dadeville in the final standings.
BRHS scored 68 points at the meeting. The boys 4X100 relay team won its meet with a time of 44.60 seconds. The girls 4X400 relay team finished third with a time of 54.82 seconds.
In the sprint medley 800-meter relays, Benjamin Russell came up trumps as well.
“We had a lot of success there,” Holinquest said of the relay events. “But we’re looking to trim down our times by a couple seconds so we are able to compete at that state-championship level.”
In the discus throw, Tabias Russell finished second, and Jalen Kelly was third.
The jump events also saw a Wildcat take home the top spot, as Andrew Caldwell won the long jump event with a distance of 20 feet.
Cameron Fuller was third in that event with a distance of 19-08 feet, and was second in the triple jump with a distance of 44 feet.
“Ever since going to Junior Nationals, his stock has been rising,” Holinquest said of Fuller. “We’re proud of his humbleness and willingness to help the team any way he can.”
Next for the Wildcats is a return to Sylacauga this Thursday.
“The team has worked really hard, and we’re expecting great things,” Holinquest said. “We’re looking for success. We came in second last time, and this time we expect to come in first.”
