Early morning house fire leaves one dead

Published 7:41pm Tuesday, January 14, 2014

Tragedy struck Tuesday morning at the lakeside Point Cloxson community when a Dadeville woman died in a house fire.

Chief Ralph Emerson of the Dadeville Fire Department said two fire engines and nine local firefighters were dispatched to the site of the fire on Wood Duck Court around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday. Killed in the blaze was 49-year-old Catherine E. Tankersley. The cause of the blaze has not yet been determined, according to Steve Holmes of the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Tankersley’s remains were sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for autopsy, Holmes said.

Once the fire was extinguished, the scene was turned over to the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department, Emerson said.

Another DFD crew was sent back to the scene about an hour later, he added, to clear debris from the scene and assist investigators. The fire is under investigation by the Alabama State Fire Marshal’s Office.
