BRHS’ Robinson, Maxwell claim top five finishes

Benjamin Russell’s top three grapplers continued their strong seasons, as Daniel Bland, Deon Maxwell and Tae Robinson each had top-five finishes at the Scott Rohrer Invitational at Hoover High School.
Bland in particular was impressive, as the Wildcats’ heavyweight wrestler won the event in his weight class.
Bland ran through his first two opponents, pinning Gardendale’s Joey Jones in 0:21 of the first period and following that by gaining a fall over Tuscaloosa County heavyweight Will Hogue at 0:24 of the first period.
In the quartefinal match, Bland defeated Hoover’s Gavin Jackson by pinfall with nine seconds left in the second period.
Bland proceeded to the finals when he gained a fall over Catholic’s K.J. Wright late in the third period and eventually claimed the tournament win when he defeated Gardendale grappler Daniel Adkins.
Adkins came into the match with a 28-1 record.
On the year, Bland is 29-5.
In the 222-pound division, BRHS sophomore Tae Robinson finished in fourth place.
Robinson began the event winning his first four matches. In the opening round, Robinson downed Opelika’s Demontrae Martin by sudden victory.
Robinson followed that started with a quick pin over Alex Stanford of Oak Mountain High School.
Robinson grinded out decision wins over Scottsboro’s Matthew Franklin and Prattville’s Chris Lujan to advance to the semifinals.
However, Robinson’s bid to win his division was halted by undefeated 222-pounder Dalton Campbell of Vestavia Hills, who pinned Robinson in the second period of their match.
Robinson rebounded to defeat Hoover’s Bret Winters in a consolation round, but came up short versus Scottsboro’s Matthew Franklin in the third-place match.
Robinson’s record on the season following this tournament is 23-7.
Grappler Deon Maxwell finished fifth in the 172-pound tournament.
The early stages of the tourney didn’t start well for the Wildcats senior, as he came up on the short end of two decisions.
Maxwell was able to regroup to win three matches at the Scott Rohrer Invitiational.
Maxwell defeated Tanner Jones of Tuscaloosa County to advance to the quarterfinals.
Despite losing in that round, Maxwell won two of his final three matches, including another defeat of Jones in the fifth-place match, to secure a top-five placing.
Overall, Maxwell’s win-loss record stands at 23-7.
In other action at the tournament, Kashus Culpepper (184-pound division) and Tyler Presley (108-pound division) each earned top-10 finishes at the event.
Culpepper (14-18) finished seventh, earning three victories during the tournament. Two of those wins came by pinfall.
Presley (9-9) finished eighth.
