Benjamin Russell wrestling coach Andrew Campbell has consistently said that the team is grappling for the long term – that being the sectional and state championship meets in February.
But in the short term, it looks like the Wildcats have a few grapplers that will be more than prepared for the challenges waiting down the road.
During this past weekend’s Huntsville Invitational, three Benjamin Russell grapplers placed in the top five of their respective weight classes, and two more wrestlers placed in the top 10 for their weight divisions.
Senior Deon Maxwell placed fourth in the 170-pound division, compiling a 5-2 record during the invitational.
Maxwell was able to win his pool in convincing fashion, winning both pool-play matches by pin (John Paul II Catholic’s Holden Fielder and Buckhorn’s Jacob McCalpin.
Upon entering tournament play, Maxwell defeated Sparkman wrestler Joshua Little  by pin and followed that up by defeating Bob Jones’ Tyler Moulton by a 4-2 decision in the quarterfinals.
Maxwell was defeated by Huntsville grappler Sam Howard in the semifinals and came up short in the third-place match versus Madison County’s Trevor Edwards.
Sophomore mat ‘Cat Tae Robinson earned fifth place in the 220-pound weight class, and like teammate Maxwell, put together a 5-2 record during the weekend.
Robinson earned a pin over Hartselle’s John Holt, but Madison County grappler Steven Dasaro defeated Robinson by pin in the second match of pool play.
Robinson received a bye in tournament play, then pinned Westminster wrestler Kendall Farr before coming up on the short end of majority decision versus Cameron England of Buckhorn High School. Robinson closed strongly, winning decisions versus Jordan Pop of Independence (5-2) and Arab’s Ian Scott (20-9).
BRHS heavyweight Daniel Bland also came up trumps in five of his seven outings as he placed fourth in his division.
Bland defeated James Clemens grappler Keoni Parks 3-1 in his first-round match and followed that by pinning Athens wrestler Tre Avery.
Bland then clinched a spot in the heavyweight finals with a 20-6 majority decision over Walker High School’s Dakota Birdyshaw.
Bland lost to Matt Franko of Scottsboro by a 10-4 decision in the heavyweight finals, and Parks later avenged his earlier loss to Bland in the consolation round.
182-pound grappler Kashus Culpepper went 4-3 during the Huntsville Invitational and finished seventh. Along the way, he gained a pinfall win over Huntsville’s Brett Stoddard and a 9-0 majority decision win over Muscle Shoals wrestler Robert Green.
In the 195-pound division, Jamie Whitehead also went 4-3 and earned a seventh place finish. He gained two of his wins via pinfall during the event, defeating Independence’s Ian Pillow and Buckhorn’s Shawn Kiser.
