Lady Cats hold off Childersburg

Published 2:10pm Friday, December 6, 2013

Despite a furious fourth-quarter rally from Childersburg, the Benjamin Russell girls basketball team prevailed in a defensive battle 47-43.
Jernika Russell paced the Lady ‘Cats with 12 points and was one of three players who scored in double figures. Chloe Owens and Cookie Kelley each netted 10 points.
BRHS was able to keep the clamps on Childersburg for the first three quarters, as the Lady ‘Cats entered the final period with a 35-22 lead.
However, the Lady Tigers then rediscovered their offense, particularly from three-point range. Twelve of  Childersburg’s first 14 fourth-quarter points came from long range.
The Lady Tigers cut the Wildcats’ lead to five, but a steal by Owens and her ensuing lay-up helped keep Childersburg at bay.
The Lady Tigers answered and were down 45-38, but Owens went coast to coast and scored on a layup to put BRHS back up by seven. Childersburg was able to cut it to four, but BRHS kept the Lady Tigers off the scoreboard for the rest of the game. Aaliyah Lawson added eight points for the Lady ‘Cats. Nikita Adamson scored four points, and Savannah Pearson scored three points.
The Wildcats head to Rockford to face Coosa on Friday.
