SHS, Thomas too much for BRHS

Published 10:54am Wednesday, December 4, 2013

Playing against a team that has the reigning 5A player of the year and the No. 3 guard recruit in the nation is a tough task, but the Lady Wildcats of Benjamin Russell were up for it.
However, Shakayla Thomas and the Sylacauga Lady Aggies were too much in the end, as BRHS fell 59-43 despite fast starts by Cookie Kelley and Jernika Russell.
The game became out of reach at the midway point of the third quarter, when Thomas keyed a 12-0 run for the Lady Aggies that ended the period at 47-34 in favor of the visitors.
Thomas scored 22 points in the second half.
BRHS was very much in the contest early on, as the Lady Wildcats flew out of the gate on a 8-2 run before the Lady Aggies claimed control.
The Wildcats refused to go away quietly, as a scoring run by Sylacauga in the second quarter was answered with a quick run of their own to make the score 31-26 at intermission.
The Lady Aggies upped their lead to start the third, but the Wildcats answered
Two quick baskets by Russell and a jumper by  Kelley pulled BRHS to within three points, but the offense went cold, and Thomas took over to ice it for SHS.
