Parks and Rec hosting father/son banquet

Published 8:43pm Wednesday, December 4, 2013

The Alexander City Parks and Recreation department is preparing to give fathers and sons a nice day out.
Alexander City Parks and Rec will hold a father/son banquet on Thursday, Dec. 12 from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Betty Carol Graham center located on the campus of Central Alabama Community College.
The event is open to school-age boys (grades K-12) and their fathers.
“Most of the time, when fathers and sons are together it’s during a ball game.” said Alexander City Parks and Rec director Sonny Wilson. “We wanted to do something special and give them a day out, similar to what we do in February for mothers and daughters. We want to give them a special night just for them to hang out.”
Ron Polk, former baseball coach at Mississippi State University, is scheduled to be the guest speaker for the occasion.
Polk is a national championship-winning coach that has coached many players that have gone on to play professionally.
Admission to the event is free. Wilson said a ticket would be required, however.
“We need to know how many people are coming, so we’ll know how many we’ll have to feed,” he said. “There’s limited space for the event.”
Tickets have been available since Dec. 2. Anyone who wants to attend can stop by the Charles E. Bailey Sportplex gym to pick up a ticket between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
“In today’s society, I don’t think fathers take enough quality time with their sons, and we’re always in a hurry,” Wilson said. “Hopefully this event can change that.”
