‘Cats XC team ends year on high notePublished 9:09pm Wednesday, November 13, 2013
If the AHSAA Class 5A State Championships are any indication, the Benjamin Russell High School cross country team will field runners that can compete with some of the best athletes in Alabama for the foreseeable future.
Four Wildcat cross-country runners – Dee Tuggle, Miranda Roberts, Dillon Dean and Bradley Stewart – competed at Oakville Indian Mounds Park this past weekend.
Stewart finished with a time of 20:01.20, which was good for fifth-best among all eighth-grade runners.
Dean, who finished 17th at the 2012 state championships, outdid that placing when he ran the 5000-meter final in 16:42.20, which was good for eighth-place overall.
“All runners had a great day at the state championships,” said BRHS cross country coach Michelle Tuggle. “We are so proud of them all, especially Dillon.”
In the girls’ 5A meet, Tuggle finished in 25:27.10, and Roberts finished in 24:52.70. Roberts’ finish was good enough to place among the top-20 junior runners at Class 5A.
“The girls team had their best times of the season,” M. Tuggle said.
Dean, who is a sophomore this year will return to the team, as will Tuggle and Roberts, who will enter next season as seniors.
M. Tuggle said the team’s finish at the 5A meet already has them motivated to return next season and continue to improve.
“What a wonderful way to finish the season,” she said. “We are already looking ahead to next year by setting off-season goals.”
M. Tuggle added that she has high hopes for the team entering next season.
“I think you will see several top 20 runners from BRHS next year,” she said.
