Holiday open house to offer special sales

Published 7:45pm Wednesday, November 6, 2013

On Nov. 17, Alexander City will begin to look a lot like Christmas.
In association with local retailers, the Alexander City Chamber of Commerce will host the Holiday Open House and Christmas Spectacular Sunday, Nov. 17 from 1-4 p.m.
Ann Rye, executive director of the Alexander City Chamber of Commerce, said local retailers will have special sales that day for customers.
“Each retailer that will be participating will have a special that day – kind of like a Black Friday that the big box stores have,” Rye said. “Some will have refreshments, and some will have drawings for gifts, but it will be a festive afternoon to set their holiday shopping.”
Rye added there will be a couple of activities going on downtown to get citizens in the Christmas spirit.
“On top of the retail, the chamber – sponsored by Reynolds and Mason Attorneys at Law and Little Black Dress – will have carriage rides for the community,” Rye said. “We’ll have those downtown around the roundabout and through Main Street. While you’re riding in the carriage, you can hear the music of 13 of our choirs in the surrounding area singing in front of old city hall.”
A stage will also be setup down at the foot of Strand Park with choirs singing.
Santa Claus will be there for children to take pictures.
Following the retail sales, at 4:15 p.m. the Mamie’s Place Children’s Library will will read the Night Before Christmas for children and at 4:30 p.m. the Christmas Spectacular will start.
“It’s a community celebration with a message of hope that we all share through the birth of Jesus and Christmas,” Rye said. “There will be several faith leaders, special music and we’ll end the evening with a candle lighting.”
Rye said those attending the Christmas Spectacular should bring a lawn chair, and there will be a live nativity scene.
“This is our opportunity to give them back a little something special for the holidays,” Rye said. “It’s just a fun day to bring everybody out with the family and do some Christmas shopping.”
On the following Monday, anyone who spent $20 total or more in one of the retailers Nov. 17 can bring their recent to the chamber and the first 100 will receive an ornament.
Participating retailers include Alexander City Flower Boutique, Alex City Unique Flowers and Gifts, Antique Mall of Memories, Busy B’s Consignment and More, Caldwell Electronics, Carlisle Drug Company, Cloud Nine, Fairy Tale Parties and Adventures, For Heaven’s Sake, Goody’s, Jackson Drugs, Little Black Dress, Longleaf Antique and Flea Mall, Inc., Mistletoe Bough Bed and Breakfast, Steele’s, Russell Retail Store, Wireless Advantage, Roses, Walmart and the Shoppes of Queen’s Attic.
During lunch, participating restaurants will include  Annie Mae’s Kountry Kitchen, Buck’s Dairy Quik, Burger King, Carlos Mexican Grill, City Buffet, Domino’s Pizza, Huddle House, Jake’s, JR’s Sports Bar and Grill, KFC, Papa John’s Pizza, Wendy’s, Who’s Diner and Zaxby’s.
